One of the more expert birders on my bird list posted that he saw a pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers at Emery State Park.  Apparently, they've been there before and have just returned and set-up home there for the season again. Since it was such a lovely day, I decided to take an adventure and drive down there to see if I could spot them. Never having seen a Red-headed Woodpecker before, I was hoping to add him to my life list!

It didn't take me long at all to spot the pair. They were just where Chris said they'd be, by the giant, dead trees at the North west entrance to the park. I didn't capture very good photos as they were pretty high and far, but I'm posting what I took just because I'm excited to have seen them!

I spotted 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 2 Blue Jays, a Northern Flicker, a Downy Woodpecker, 2 Black-capped Chickadees, 2 Song Sparrows, a fly-over by a Baltimore Oriole, a White-breasted Nuthatch, and an Eastern Phoebe, another life list addition. I wasn't fast enough to get a photo of the Phoebe, but I got a nice, clear few moments to study it through my binoculars.

I also had a nice visit from 6 Pine Siskins this morning. They really attacked the nyjer thistles in the feeder, which, coincidentally, is what I'm getting my mother for Mother's Day (hope she doesn't read this 'til after tomorrow!). Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there!
