My First Purple Finch

I saw my first Purple Finch today, a lone female. She was grouped in with several House Finches and American Goldfinches. I was so excited to see something "different" at my feeders! At first, I thought she was a Song Sparrow, but her finch-like beak and distinctive eyebrow made me look for confirmation that she was, indeed, a Purple Finch. And sure enough, a bird-expert friend identified her.  Unfortunately, her male counterpart was nowhere to be seen, but I'll keep watching for him!

A Red-tailed Hawk soared overheard, scattering the flock at the feeders. Fortunately, he never came closer.

Mystery Solved!

I've been excited quite a few times lately thinking I may be seeing a new species at our feeders. But I just found out that what I'm seeing is a juvenile male House Finch. He travels along with the finches, so I began to suspect as much. I've seen him several times now and, instead of red, there's a yellow-orange coloring on his breast and head. Audubon's Guide confirmed that it's an immature male.  I've grabbed several photos of him over the last month, so I thought I'd post them in the event anyone else has been confused over this strange coloring.

Thanks so much for the comment on my blog today Sue! I love your blog and hope I can learn more from you about those wonderful little birds which share our property with us. Yesterday we had an unusually warm day here in St. Louis and when I walked outside I heard birds singing. I told my husband "listen - they are singing about spring". A fierce winter storm is heading our way so I was glad I got to hear them if it was only for a moment! Enjoy your day. deb"

Thanks for your comment, Deb. Stay safe from the storm and remember to help feed our little feathered friends during these cold days; you just might save some lives!"

One of my favorite birds, the Brown Creeper, came around several times today, as evidenced by the different lighting in the photos below. I haven't seen him in awhile, so I was glad to have him stop by again.

I just happened to be around with my camera nearby and managed to capture a few decent photos of him finally. This bird is so camouflaged, it's been a challenge to get a good focus on him.

Enjoy the photos...
